The Spirit of Connection

🍂 October 2025 🍂

Hey Growers,

October has always been one of the most meaningful months for me. It marks my anniversary with Xiang. We were together for twelve years and married for ten before he passed. Our life together was built around connection, creativity, and finding beauty in the simple, shared moments. We cooked together, traveled, decorated for Halloween, dreamed, and always found joy in building something meaningful side by side.

That spirit of connection is at the heart of everything I continue to do here. I feel it when I am out in the field building animal shelters with my family, when I hike through the woods and stop to notice the way the light hits the trees, and when I uncover something new on the land and instantly think about how it could become a space for others to experience wonder and peace.

Building and growing Farm in Broome has reminded me how powerful community can be. Family, friends, and neighbors have shown up in ways that continue to move me. From lending a hand when something breaks to arriving with food, tools, or a simple word of encouragement, this place has been shaped by the love and generosity of so many. It is a reminder that none of us build anything alone.

My family has been my anchor through every stage of this journey. Xiang was that anchor long before, and in his own journey through cancer he taught me what real bravery looks like. He showed me that love can stand steady even in the hardest moments and that hope can exist right alongside grief. That lesson lives in everything I build here. The support, patience, and belief in my vision has been a steady foundation when things feel uncertain.

Neighbors have also become partners in this dream, and people like Jay Vandermark and his family at Vandermark Paving LLC have truly stepped in and helped in bringing this vision to life. I am also deeply grateful for the community on Huggins Road — Ed and Michelle, the Persuad family, the downstaters who have found their way here, and the lifers who have called this place home long before me.

Their encouragement, advice, and simple check-ins have made me feel supported in ways I did not expect but deeply needed. Together we have created something that feels alive and welcoming, a place rooted in shared purpose and open to everyone who arrives with curiosity and care.

The same way Xiang and I always found meaning in creating experiences together, the farm now holds space for others to find that same sense of connection, healing, and joy. What began as something deeply personal has become something shared.

As the leaves turn and the season shifts, I feel grateful for how far we have come and for everyone who continues to be part of this story.

So much has already happened here, and even more is about to unfold in the coming months. None of it would be possible without the steady hands of family, the encouragement of neighbors, and the growing community that believes in this place. Thank you for being part of this journey.

Let’s Grow, Steven

Next Month...

Next month marks the start of the next big project, building my very own shipping container home. It’s a project rooted in sustainability, creativity, and the same care I bring to every corner of the farm. The blueprints are ready, the land is set, and soon, we’ll begin turning steel and soil into something truly special.
